Global learning, or a phrase like it, has become one of the most pervasive watchwords in higher education today. And for good reason: in today’s world of deeply intertwined global relationships, the ability to move easily within and between cultures is becoming not only an increasingly prized qualification for jobs in any number of fields, but has become an indispensable component of a college education in the twenty-first century.
The Baruch College Study Abroad Office helps students from all three Baruch Schools who wish to study abroad attain their educational and cultural learning goals. We also assists Baruch faculty in developing study abroad programs. As part of the Weissman Center for International Business, the Study Abroad Office has been promoting the aims of global education at Baruch for over two decades. We look forward to continuing to help the entire Baruch College community achieve these important aims both today and in the future.

UPDATE: MAINTAINING STUDY ABROADWe are delighted that we have been allowed to resume study abroad on a larger scale since summer 2022. We sent a record number of students abroad during the fall 2022 semester, and the vast majority of our exchange programs have been cleared as destinations for Baruch students (these programs have been officially “relaunched,” in CUNY terminology). As a result, students can once again consider studying abroad with some degree of confidence. We are grateful that formal petitions to CUNY are no longer required in order to relaunch our exchange programs. As these encouraging current trends continue, COVID-19 restrictions will no longer encumber our students’ travels abroad.
While the COVID-19 pandemic currently does not prevent students from studying abroad, that could change if there is a new wave of cases in one or more destination countries. In addition, concerns related to health and safety issues have prevented us from resuming some of our exchange programs. In particular, an exchange program located in a country which is designated by the U.S. Department of State as having a Level 3 Travel Advisory must go through a separate petition process. At the moment, this only affects our exchange programs in China, including Hong Kong SAR, but it might affect students’ plans to study through direct enrollment or on a Sponsored Study Abroad Program in another country with a Level 3 Travel Advisory. As a result, we are proceeding resolutely, but cautiously, in planning for study abroad. For students applying to study at one of our exchange partner universities in China, we will follow a modified version of the “twin-track” approach we have successfully used in the past.
Track 1: Applications to Study Abroad
You should apply to study abroad as you normally would (i.e. as if there were no Level 3 Travel Advisory). We will process your applications, schedule interviews for exchange programs, give provisional approval of applications, and make nominations for our exchanges as we normally would do. Final approval will be given once study abroad to your destination has been formally approved. For this reason, please consider carefully any substantial non-refundable financial commitments you make.
Track 2: Registration for Study Abroad
As a general precaution, we continue to recommend that all students applying to study abroad continue to register for courses at Baruch for the coming Winter Intersession and spring semester as you would if you were not planning to study abroad. Once travel to your study abroad destination has been confirmed, or, in the case of students hoping to travel to countries with Level 3 Travel Advisories, approved,we will work with you to have you registered for study abroad.
