Freshman FAQs

Access the General Freshman FAQs page to find answers to common inquiries.

Acceda a la página de Preguntas Frecuentes Generales para Estudiantes de Primer Año para encontrar respuestas a preguntas comunes.

We understand that starting a new school can be both exciting and overwhelming, with many questions along the way. Please check out the FRESHMAN PARENT RESOURCE menu below to find answers to some of your questions.

Freshman Academic FAQ's

1- How much do freshman grades matter for college admissions?

Don’t make this a subject of great worry and added stress. Yes, it is always important for students to do as well as possible in their classes during high school but colleges understand that freshman year can be a time of adjustment for many students. If the freshman year has been challenging, admissions officers will be looking for an upward trend in the student’s grades over the next three years.

Students who are in need of an extra measure of academic support should meet with counselors to consider additional options. Please check the Counseling Office website for Academic Support and more information or contact your student's counselor

2- Standardized Testing- What standardized tests will my student need to take and when will he/she take them?

Don’t worry if your freshman student did not need to take the PSAT. It isn't required, but we recommend that students take the PSAT in their 9th and 10th years to gain important practice and test-taking skills. Our student support teams also utilize PSAT data to identify students who may need additional support or who may be a fit for academic advancement.

There is plenty of time to take this practice SAT test during their sophomore and junior years. On the Counseling website, there is a comprehensive page about all the tests and when it is recommended for students to take them. -- PSAT/SAT/ACT Testing

3- What do a freshmen learn during the Course Selection/Learning Style/College Planning sessions with ICAP & Naviance?

Freshman receive instruction from their counselor in their Freshman Seminar classes during the first semester through Individual Career and Academic Plan lessons. We focus on setting goals and exploring personal strengths in addition to getting students familiar with Naviance, a tool that is used to complete a variety of career and personal assessments along with college searches and the college application process. In the second semester (typically February) counselors will present to students in their social studies class and review graduation requirement information, 4-year planning, and choosing classes for the next year. Then in March, students will review their class choices with counselors and input their choices into Infinite Campus.

In the next three months, freshmen will be taking interest surveys and also developing a plan to give them ideas and requirements for future course selections. Parents have access to Naviance on our website by obtaining a password from the Administrative Assistant in the Counseling Office.

Naviance is also a powerful tool for researching colleges when your student is ready. It's a great idea to get your login and ask your student if they know theirs.

Freshman Seminar

FreshmAn Seminar

Freshman seminar is a course designed to promote a successful transition between middle school and high school. Taught by Fairview teachers and Knight Crew students, the course provides 9th grade students with the opportunities for academic enrichment and assistance, as well as the chance to improve organizational and communication skills.

Since every freshmen is in a seminar class, and the classes are smaller, it gives us the perfect venue for sharing information, touching base with goals and grades, and participating in common school activities. Seminar also provides future planning, course selection, progress monitoring, building independent learners and student self efficacy.

Policies and Procedures

BVSD Students Rights & Responsibilities

Attendance

If your student will be absent please contact the school and let them know. Visit the Attendance/Report page for more information OR call your student's absence in to FHS at 720.561.5352. If you know your student will be absent you can have them complete a Pre-arranged absence form and have teachers sign off on the form prior to the absence.

If your student is absent due to a doctor's visit or other medical reason, don't forget to bring in a doctor's note excusing your student's absence to clear the absence. The student can drop this off at the front office.

Dress code

The Boulder Valley School District believes all students have the right to an equitable education and should be able to dress, and style their hair, for school in a manner that expresses their individuality without fear of unnecessary discipline or body shaming. Enforcement of this universal dress code shall not create disparities, reinforce stereotypes or increase marginalization of any group, nor will it be more strictly enforced against students because of racial identity, ethnicity, gender identity, gender expression, gender nonconformity, sexual orientation, cultural identity, religious identity, household income or body type/size.

Learn more about BVSD's Dress Code policy.

Fairview's approach to discipline, attendance and suspension

Students are to maintain behavior that promotes safety and respect for all. The BVSD Policies JD/JR, JDC, JDC-R, JDD, JDHB, JDSE, JFCH/JFCI, JBB, JDDA, JBB, and KE list specific conduct that shall be maintained by students and activities that will result in disciplinary action.

For Spanish version, please see policies JD/JR-SP, JDC-SP, JDC-R-SP, JDD-SP, JDHB-SP, and JDSE-SP.

Copies of these policies may be obtained from a school administrator or on the BVSD Policy Website at https://www.bvsd.org/about/board-of-education/policies.

Though suspension is a commonly used disciplinary technique, and supported by BVSD Policy JDSE/JDSE-R (Spanish Policy JDSE-SP/JDSE-R-SP), Fairview High School recognizes that although suspending students from school is sometimes necessary, there are other responses to violations of rules that can be implemented as first steps that do not remove a student from school.

As part of the discipline procedure, FHS has implemented a range of strategies to increase positive choices from students, reduce misbehavior while maintaining a safe learning environment. Some of these strategies include community service, restorative practices, substance abuse classes, counseling, and conflict resolution. In some suspension cases one of the above listed alternatives may be explored.

It is important to note that when FHS implements a suspension alternative to a student, the fidelity of the consequence must be 100% adhered to in order to reach a successful learning outcome for the student. This includes but is not limited to dates, times, and location of community service and/or restorative practices. For student athletes, additional sanctions will be imposed per the athletic code of conduct. Suspensions may be reported to college or universities depending on the individual school’s requirements.

Our goal is to use an instructional, rather than a punitive approach to addressing discipline. At the same time, our expectation is that all students follow the policies set forth by Fairview High School and the Boulder Valley School District.

School Administration will determine if a student is “under the influence,” in possession of, or has used alcohol or illegal substances by a body of evidence which could include, but not be limited to: smell, eyes, speech, behavior, etc.

Disciplinary action can result from acts outside regular school hours or the regular school year or off school grounds, which embarrass, humiliate, or degrade other students, staff members, or the reputation of Fairview High School, or which interfere with the school’s ability to operate effectively. These undesirable actions may result in suspension from any part, or all, of an activity or athletic season, or from school.

Health and Safety

Student Health Room

We prioritize creating a nurturing environment for our students, and that's why we have a dedicated Student Health Room on campus. This space provides a safe place for students to address health concerns and access resources for their well-being.Our goal is to ensure every student feels supported, healthy, and ready to excel in all aspects of their lives.

Students may also drop in before or after school, during an off period, or during lunch (but not during class) to speak with the counselor-on-duty. For contact information and office hours, visit the Counselors Page.

Wellness Center

The Wellness Center is a safe and supportive space where students can rest and recharge, connect with their peers or talk with a Mental Health Advocate about their feelings and experiences.

One goal of the Wellness Center is to show that early intervention matters – recognizing and addressing mental health concerns early can make a significant difference in a student’s life.

Safety and Security

Boulder Valley School District is committed to keeping our school communities safe.
